A fresh sound arrives on the African Hip-hop Scene
Capsolys proud to call Africa home
Hip-hop has long been in need of a change. Gone are the days of gangsta 'rap', lyrics promoting violence, the degradation of women and the veneration of drugs. The icons of the genre are repositioning themselves, spreading messages to inspire, encourage and enlighten the youth. 25 year old Capsolys has done it this way from the start, spreading light, love and smiles since the day he rapped his first poem.
Capsolys is the fresh, African face of the new 'conscious' hip-hop sound, using a mix of his own spiritual beliefs and real-life experiences. Combining these elements, with his raw and passionate talent, he has dedicated his life, poetry and music to spread his positive message. The music he creates is a reflection of himself and his experiences, giving his songs an honest and grounded sound. His style of hip-hop consciously strives to send a message which is fresh and influences listeners in a positive way. He radiates a positive attitude and energy rarely seen in today's hip-hop scene.
Capso describes his debut album, Things are as they are, as a photo-album. "Each track shows a detailed picture of my thoughts and feelings. The hip-hop style used allows me to capture different energies and moods." He goes on to explain, "Emotions provoked by real life situations are trapped in 'ill' rhyme form and are frozen into the music." Good hip-hop, like any art form, is the immortalising of true feelings, emotions and experiences, with the intention of striking a chord with anyone who has felt or experienced similar things.
Born in Mbujimayi in 1983, Capsolys' incredible journey, like so many successful artists, began with parents who nurtured and prepared him for a life with purpose. When his parents decided to relocate to South Africa, Capso and his four siblings were ready for a new start and saw the trip as a great adventure.
Life in Jo'burg was filled with church activities. Capsolys was 'the son of a preacher man'; his older brother and sister were in the church band. But Capso was marching to the beat of the unique rhythm in his head.
Capsolys got his first taste of recording at 13, when his brother built a small studio at the back of the house where he spent hours perfecting his songs. Already Capso knew that music was his calling.
Caspo's music has taken him places and he's spent the last few years in London where he performed showcases to industry people, international media and music lovers at venues big and small.
However, his heart and soul belong in Africa. In May 2008 he releases his debut hit, Africa, and will premiere the song and music video to the media and music industry.
Shot on film, and on location in Mozambique, it is a tribute to Africa and the place we call home. Watch out for this breath of fresh air - his hip-hop sound will entertain and enlighten. Capso is the sound of the new global hip-hop and you heard it here first!
